SURGERY

LASIK surgery is most commonly used to correct myopia (nearsightedness). It can also be used to correct hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.  The ultraviolet laser removes tissue from the cornea to alter the refractive state of the eye. This procedure enables light to be more accurately focused on the retina.

With LASIK, a laser is first used on corneal tissue to create a thin flap that is folded back to expose the remaining tissue below. The LASIK laser is then applied to reshape the cornea and the flap is folded back into place. This procedure keeps post-surgery pain to a minimum.

The benefits of LASIK are fast vision recovery and little to no post surgery pain.  Many patients feel these benefits of LASIK negate the possible complications that might arise with the creation of the corneal flap.

A consultation with Dr. Katzman will help you decide which procedure is best suited to your needs and concerns.

PRK surgery is the original form of laser eye surgery. Because the laser energy is applied directly to the surface of the cornea, cutting of the corneal tissue and a tissue flap are not required as they are with LASIK.

The recovery time with PRK is considerably longer than with LASIK. The direct to the surface treatment  can require one to three weeks for vision to be restored. Prolonged pain compared to LASIK is also a characteristic of PRK laser surgery. Pain medications can be prescribed to alleviate this pain.

Many patients feel the benefits of PRK Laser outweigh the longer recovery time because the folded corneal flap required with LASIK is not necessary.  PRK is also recommended for patients with very thin cornea or with pre-existing conditions that would make other forms of vision corrective surgery prohibitive.

A consultation with Dr. Katzman will help you decide which procedure is best suited to your needs and concerns.

Corneal flap is folded back. Laser is applied to tissue below flap.

Laser is applied directly to surface of the cornea.
