Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to the optic nerve, the vital part of the eye that carries images from the eye to the brain. The optic nerve is constructed of many fibers, much like the braided wires of an electrical extension cord. When these nerve fibers become damaged, blind spots occur.  Often blind spots are undetected before serious damage has occurred. Blindness is the result of the destruction of the optic nerve.

Early detection and treatment for glaucoma is critical, especially in senior citizens, as the destruction of the optic nerve and blindness can be prevented.

Symptoms of glaucoma should not be neglected and may include headache, eye pain, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting and multi-colored halos around lights.

Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults ages 20 to 74.  The three most common eye problems associated with diabetes are cataracts, glaucoma, and retinopathy. Blurred vision can be the result of elevated blood sugar levels causing the lens of the eye to swell. It can take months for your vision to return to normal once your blood sugar is under control.

Regular visits to your ophthalmologist are important to maintain healthy vision and avoid eye problems.

Any event that causes eyesight to be a risk should be considered an emergency and given immediate attention by an ophthalmologist or an emergency room physician.  Emergency conditions may include:

  1. Severe eye, face or head injury

  2. Chemical contact with eye

  3. Sudden loss or partial loss of vision

  4. Eye pain

  5. Onset of flashes and floaters in vision

  6. Eye sensitivity to light

  7. Bulging eye

  8. Foreign object in eye

  9. Double vision

  10. Infectious discharge, decreased vision, or increased redness

We perform precise eye exams for prescription eyewear and contact lenses.

Infectious eye diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Some infections should be considered serious and be given proper medical attention.
